Hello, I am Laura Bertinelli, a graphic designer and illustrator who loves cats, cooking and collecting knick-knacks.

This is where I get together all the (beautiful) things that inspire me and where I write down my life tales.

Thursday links & Things I love

I am here in my room, at home alone: the house is so silent that someone could think that no one’s in! Today and the past three days I got up at 6am, and I LOVE IT. It’s impressive, how many things one can do in the early hours!

This week, super-busy & rushing, is going great: these are some of the things that made the past days shine even brighter.

♥ Carrot&almond cake ♥ my boyfriend, who’s never afraid of talking to me about ANYTHING ♥ writing my February resolutions and reading them over and over again (self-confidence overdose!) ♥ posting Style Bits, the first of a co-blogging adventure with the lovely Ottavia ♥ working on my website, I can’t wait to share something with you! ♥ listening to Antony & The Johnsons while on the bus in a sunny morning ♥ Bright Eyes’ Digital Ash In A Digital Urn, which is one of my favorite albums EVER! ♥ studying sessions at friends’ places ♥ dinner with friends this evening (I’m cooking a risotto with courgette and pork underbelly!) ♥ doing researches on ecofriendly textiles, for my degree project, and gathering lots of interesting ideas ♥ designing a logo for my brother’s electronic music duo ♥ celebrating 52 months together with my boyfriend! That’s a lot! ♥ eating Angry Whoppers & having long walks after dinner, with S.

——

As i already wrote in my February resolutions, I am trying to spend (waste) less time at the computer: i.e. less internetting! I need lots of time to dedicate to my university duties, so… I decided to do a little internet-detox.

Anyways, here are some interesting links! I’ll NEVER stop posting my Thursday Links regularly! :)

♥ Conductor, by MTA, turns the NYC subway into an interactive instrument: yesterday I left this page open all day long… it serves as a good, relaxing soundtrack, plus it is amazing to look at.

♥ I know this is old news, but this photobomber squirrel made me laugh so hard! It’s lovely! If something like this would have happened to me, I’d be so happy forever!

♥ Fuck Photoshop: a pencil for the purists - I definitely need it!

♥ Cat vs. Human will become a book! I can’t wait to buy a copy… I like that blog way too much :)

♥ Wow. This blog looks so good: www.loveandutility.com

♥ Oscar Diaz is a product designer based in London, and you should really check his website. I especially like this shoe alphabet and this cutlery set!

♥ Some good photography by Amira Fritz: desaturated flowers and landscapes. Relaxing!

♥ V Magazine unveils Chanel spring 2011 couture with some amazing photographs. SWOON! And be sure to have a look at all of the other sets they published!

♥ Mmmh, let your voyeuristic inner self enjoy Nubby Twiglet’s What’s in my bag? post!

♥ Isn’t this sweater lovely? Should I buy it? I can’t decide!

♥ And now, enjoy this lovely Valentine’s day DIY video!

Now, it’s time for a quick shower and to get ready for another long day of study!

Love, always!

Thursday links & Things I love

After two weeks of hard work, I’m enjoying some days off! (see also: university!)
Here is my Things I Love list:

♥ Christmas tree at my boyfriend’s place ♥ emails from my teacher about my degree project! ♥ drawing a lot ♥ weekend in my hometown, with my family… ♥ …and going back to Roma to my beloved one ♥ organizing guided tours in my hometown for a friend of mine who came visiting ♥ spending some good times with my brother ♥ lots, lots of text messages from one of my favorite people (Costy I luv you!) ♥ my boyfriend, who is also an excellent plumber! ♥ my lovely friend Barb, who finally received the gifts me and S. sent her for her birthday! ♥ waking up early in the morning ♥ Chinese convenient stores, where you can find ANYTHING.

——

♥ Miss Nubby Twiglet answered my questions about freelancing: her words were so helpful and inspiring! This is well worth reading! Thanks, Nubby!

♥ Eight biscuits is a new blog about fashion, run by an Italian girl named Ottavia! She’s on tumblr too! Good work, fellow countrywoman!

♥ Karl Lagerfeld quotes? Yes, please!

Advanced Style is an awesome blog about fashion, but from a different point of view: aged people! This is so interesting.

♥ If you love packaging and vintage imagery, you MUST check the vintage packaging category in The Dieline blog. Delight for your eyes!

♥ I love Christopher Niemann, and if you do too, you should read this interview, where he talks about his creative process, his daily routines and other curiosities!

♥ How Low Can Your Logo is a peculiar contest: design the WORST logo ever!

♥ I’ve never been in a taxidermy museum, but it it should be amazingly fun!

♥ David Lynch is releasing an album and a single, and I’m damn curious to hear it.

♥ And now, two silly, yet hilarious, videos: the Peguin Dilemma and Static Cat vs. Ballon! Haha!

——

What about your favorite links this week? I’d LOVE to hear from you!
Also, do not forget to visit my Etsy shop, there are some nice Christmas cards waiting for you! :]

Love and vintage packages,

Thursday Links

Ciao!! How are you, my dear and passionate readers?

Today I am going back to Roma, with a load of new books I was given for my birthday and with some extra money for shopping! Finally, I can buy a pair of boots! :]
Hooray!

——

Here are some links, ready to share:

♥ Tavi Gevinson talks about feminism: she is so smart and YOUNG! Oh, I really admire her.

♥ These photos by Laura Alice Watt are incredible: soft lights, bright colors and great landscapes. Yes please!

♥ I really like food photography, I find it really difficult and therefore I admire food photographers. This is a tumblr blog about food, higly recommended!

♥ And now, some design related links: this Alfazoo is a collection of animals created with type. It is really interesting, and with such a vintage vibe!

♥ Milton Glaser talks about the 10 things he learned in his lifetime and professional career:
“It makes me nervous when someone believes too deeply or too much. I think that being sceptical and questioning all deeply held beliefs is essential. Of course we must know the difference between scepticism and cynicism because cynicism is as much a restriction of one’s openness to the world as passionate belief is. They are sort of twins. And then in a very real way, solving any problem is more important than being right”

♥ Nubby Twiglet writes about being ourselves while designing: so true! I believe she is a great designer and I really admire her work!

♥ This video from the ad campaign for HP printers left me speechless.

This is the smallest stopmotion video ever filmed!
“Professor Fletcher’s invention of the CellScope, which is a Nokia device with a microscope attachment, was the inspiration for a teeny-tiny film created by Sumo Science at Aardman. It stars a 9mm girl called Dot as she struggles through a microscopic world. All the minuscule detail was shot using CellScope technology and a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics.”
It is amazing to see how powerful is technology nowadays, isn’t it?

See you next Thursday for more delicious links!
Have an amazing day and a delightful evening,

Thursday Links

It is Thursday again!! The day dedicated to links, links, links!!

How is your week going? Tomorrow, I am doing an exam: FINGER CROSSED! :D
I am also planning a huge update/restyling of my portfolio [such hard work] and doing some postcards to sell on my Etsy shop, which is empty at the moment!

But now, the links!

——

♥ Yesterday I went to the cinema and watched Somewhere by Sofia Coppola. I liked it, despite the ending, that left me and my boyfriend pretty confused. Not that I dislike cryptic endings, but this movie, IMHO, needed something different! Anyways, it is a good movie with great actors: Elle Fanning is sooo cute and talented!

♥ You may not know that I’m a HUGE fan of Gossip Girl! Oh, I really like it :]
I just found out that Season 4 will be premiered in the US on Sept. 13! Here is the promo: the first episodes take place in Paris!

♥ The September issue of Vogue Italy comes with a pair of 3D glasses to look at Miranda Kerr photoshoot, by the amazing Steven Meisel. The future is here!

♥ While browsing aimlessly the web, I stumbled on these incredible photos of animals inside wombs: scary and fascinating at the same time! I love the one with the dolphin and the one with the little lion [or is it a kitty?]

♥ Rare photos of famous people: nice!

♥ Letterheady.com is a tumblr page that collects interesting letterheads of famous people and societies: Andy Warhol, George Lucas, Johnny Cash… there’s a lot, and they are all great designs!

♥ Gemma Travis is a talented illustrator and art student! Keep on doing this great works girl!

♥ Iamnotanartist.org is an online collection of animated gifs related to the world of designers, or in their words “An animated gif paranoia about nonstop design workers”. Some of the animations are incredible! Plus, everyone can upload their animated gif, it’s open to all!

♥ As I already wrote, I love stopmotion! Deadline is a stopmotion movie made with Post It! Rad!

Have a great weekend and enjoy these links!

Thursday Links

Well, long time no see! After a LONG month of vacation, I am back, productive and ready to work! Tomorrow I am going to Roma, to my lovely boyfriend S. and my apartment [I’m scared! My housemate isn’t really a precise and good housekeeper… I’m sure there will be lots of work to do to tidy up!].

So, my links to share for this week are just a few, but please forgive me! I’ve been away from internet for A MONTH!! :O

——

♥ Tron Legacy will soon be out! I’m so excited!! I loved the first Tron, and I really hope that this sequel will satisfy my expectations. The website is très cool, and you can hear the tracks to the official soudtrack by DAFT PUNK! That’s an extra bonus to the movie!

♥ Musicphilosophy.co.uk is a collection of typographic posters dedicated to love song quotes: some of them are great, both for the design and the quality of the quote. My favorites: ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥.
You can also buy some printed versions of the posters, to hang on your walls!

♥ I found this blog, Candycoateduniverse, which is the collection of works by Sara, a designer who is also part of the Tenfold Collective from Colorado, US. Great illustrations, great brand identity design, I’d love to work for them, heheh!

♥ Lovely Tavi Gevinson and her sister Rivkah filmed a short movie, Chalk, and I liked it a lot. It’s charming, delicate and sweet.

♥ Oh, this is why I love/hate and admire/envy Japanese people: streetsofjapan.tumblr.com. Some of the looks in the pictures make me freak out!

♥ This is another website that left me speechless: www.dirtycarart.com. So, it seems that somewhere in the world is someone who feels very creative in front of a dirty car. The usual “WASH ME!” on the rear window is out of date! Why not a Monnalisa? Or a Van Gogh? This is rad!!

♥ I don’t usually believe in internet personality tests, which are often approximate and unreliable, but this one is based on the Myers-Briggs type indicator, and it actually worked! I came out as an ISTJ personality, which is COMPLETELY true on most of the aspects. And you?

♥ For the firs time, I’d like to introduce you to my work: I uploaded on my online portfolio the latest university project I’ve been working on. Here is the Blood Donation Campaign I created with two other friends of mine. Hope you like it!

♥ Speaking of university and work, I decided I want to buy a personal planner, a Filofax, to be precise. BUT, I can’t decide between these two: the raspberry Metropol, or the black Domino? Please help! The Metropol is more expensive, but I love the color; the Domino is really cheap, [thus, I can add lots of extra accessories whitout exceeding my not-so-high-budget] but maybe I should choose a “girly-er” type? Help! ç_ç

——

Have a great weekend, and stay tuned for my travel update part 2!
Love and raspberries,

L.

Thursday Links

Such a long time since the last Thursday Links post! Living without a computer for two weeks… so weird! I arranged a few links in the past days, here they are!

♥ Nubby Twiglet isn’t just a great graphic designer, but also a good blogger and she is always nice to hera readers. In the post I linked, she answers a young graphic designers on what’s our job like.

♥ These Pan Am guides left me speechless. Long live 70s graphic design!

♥ Cat Versus Human, always such a perfect and funny view on the complicated relationship between cats and humans. This strip made me laugh so hard!

♥ This lookbook for the J.Crew fall collection features such amazing photographs and clothes!

♥ I discovered this website which allows you to paste an image of a tasty, delicious slice of bacon on every site you like: http://bacolicio.us/ YUMMY!!

♥ An AMAZING Japanese videoclip about sushi!

♥ Friends of Type, a blog about excellent typography. A great source of inspiration for type-related projects… I want to be featured in this! >:[

♥ The lovely Blanca Gomez [which I already talked about!] has also an Etsy Shop! Buy buy buy!!!!!! :D

Have a great weekend my darlings!!

Thursday Links

Aaaaand here we go again with new links ready to share!

This week I’ve been kinda busy, so please forgive me if only post a few links :(
Next monday I’m doing my first exam for this term, finger crossed!!!

♥ At first, some amazing design by the super talented Cristiana Couceiro [who is also on tumblr!] I simply ADORE her works.

♥ If you love stickers, and if you also love to fill your walls or any surface in your room, this site is for you: Hu2 Design, a “wall sticker laboratory”. Good stuff, and there’s also something to customize your computers!

♥ I’m really fascinated by letterpress/woodcarving/handmade printing [I once worked on a woodcarving project, and I loved it!]… this blog is a collection of letterpress prints, metal boards, printing equipment, and good type design! Long live letterpress!

♥ A few weeks ago, I stumbled on Meowmania, an IPhone app that also has an online version: the website is so weird and fun that I had to found out more about the person who created it! Therefore, here is Jaqueline Steck, a creative technologist/interaction designer/artist. Check out her portfolio, it’s full of interesting works! +++

♥ And now, something about fashion design! You HAVE TO visit Viktor & Rolf website. Besides the fantastic clothes and the opportunity to watch the catwalk shows of their collections [in the latest, they are onstage, dressing the models and un-dressing a girl wearing 10000 differents clothes! And then they re-dress her!!] the site itself is incredible!

♥ Youtube is full of nice video with misheard lyrics of famous songs [and also full of pointless videos on misheard lyrics], and this one based on Lady Gaga Bad Romance is hilarious!

♥ And, last but not least, this is only one of the million different reasons why I do love Japan: Doraemon live show!

Tuesday Spotlight

HELLO!
This week we’re talking about product design! French Product design!
When I began university, I was really interested in product design [but when I found out that I wasn’t good at it, I switched to graphic design, and I’m soooo happy now!] and still now I try to stay updated on this subject.

So, today I’d like to introduce you to the company that, back in the day, made me discover the joys of product design: Atypyk!

They are a French ensemble of creative minds, specialised in the re-invention of everyday objects in a new, unexpected way. Their products are nice, smart and fun, and also, they aren’t as expensive as a typical design item! That’s a bonus!

[a sponge for washing dishes]

With an eye blinking to popular culture and everyday life and the other eye looking for inspiration in literature, history and traditions, Atypyk manage to design objects that are both funny and smart.

[the Pontius Pilate soap!]

Their motto is “Find happiness with Atypyk”: and I’m sure they reached the goal!
Here is the link to their online shop.

And my favorite:
